The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s sporting code states that the northern and southern division winners will be determined by the highest winning percentage of conference games. The tie-breaker rules look at head-to-head results and divisional records.

After this past weekend’s action, a couple of scenarios have developed that will shape this weekend’s divisional title hunt and championship appearances.

Bowie State University is the current leader of the northern division with a 6-0 conference and 4-0 divisional record. The Bulldogs scored early and often against Lincoln University (1-5 CIAA, 0-4 North) on Saturday; winning its home finale 57-3.

BSU will travel to Elizabeth City State University this weekend for the regular season finale. The Vikings (2-4 CIAA, 1-3 North) could end the BSU Bulldogs hopes of sweeping its conference opponents and an appearance in Durham. Game time at Roebuck Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.

ECSU suffered a 43-31 loss to Virginia Union University, who is also in the hunt for a championship berth. Virginia Union led 37-31 until Hakeem Holland’s second rushing touchdown with 2:19 left sealed the win for the Panthers. Virginia Union is currently ranked #2 in the Northern Division with a 5-1 conference and 3-1 divisional record.

Virginia Union will need assistance from Elizabeth City State to make its championship berth. If the Vikings defeat the Bulldogs and the Panthers pull off a victory in Petersburg against Virginia State University, the Panthers would end the regular season in a tie with Bowie State.

This past weekend, Virginia State (4-2 CIAA, 3-1 North) overcame a 28-13 third quarter deficit to Chowan University with two field goals and a touchdown to trail 28-26 with 7:44 left in the game. The Trojans sealed the victory with 2:06 left in the game when running back Trenton Cannon heaved a 39-yard pass to Gene Holloman for the 32-28 win.

The Virginia State and Virginia Union rivalry will kick-off at 2:00 pm in Rogers Stadium.

Chowan (3-3 CIAA, 1-3 North) will travel to Lincoln University, PA for a 1 p.m. matchup.

The southern division title game will be held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at 1:30 p.m. this weekend between Fayetteville State University and Winston-Salem State University. Both institutions hold identical conference winning percentages at 66.7 % (4-2). WSSU holds a slight edge with a 3-1 divisional record compared to the Broncos’ 2-2.

Winston-Salem State had its homecoming game deflated by Shaw University in front of nearly 16,000 fans. The Bears achieved their first win of the season with a 32-25 double overtime victory. Shaw improves to 1-5 in the conference and 1-3 in the division.

Livingstone College pulled off a feat that had escaped them for nearly 15 years. The Blue Bears won their elusive homecoming victory with a 42-35 overtime win over Fayetteville State. LC led 21-13 at halftime and held a 35-21 lead with 12:04 left in the game. The Broncos evened the score at 35 with a 90-yard punt return by Chris Hubert late in the fourth quarter. Livingstone scored on the first offensive possession of the overtime period and picked off the Broncos to end all hopes of a comeback victory.

The Blue Bears improved to 3-3 in the league and 3-1 in the division. Livingstone will host Johnson C. Smith University this Saturday in the Annual Commemorative Classic at 1 p.m.

Johnson C. Smith (3-3 CIAA, 3-1 South) defeated Saint Augustine’s 22-3 to lessen the Falcons’ Homecoming celebration.

Although the Golden Bulls sit in a three-way divisional tie with Livingstone and Winston-Salem State, the seven-game conference results determine who heads to the championship game.

Saint Augustine’s (0-6 CIAA, 0-4 South) will visit Shaw on Saturday at 1 p.m. as the highlight of the Bears Homecoming activities.

Who will make it past the regular season schedule? Will you be there to witness how it all unfolds?

The televised championship game time has been set for 2:00 p.m. Purchase your tickets online at ww.theciaa.com to avoid the lines and grab your front-row seat to the climax of this CIAA season.
